Understanding the Key Concept to Overcome Pain

Updated: Oct 10, 2025

If you're struggling with persistent shoulder pain or lower back tightness, you're not alone. Many people face similar challenges. You might have tried warming up, foam rolling, or perfecting your technique, yet the discomfort lingers.

Build Your Foundation

Ask yourself this: Did you build the base of the pyramid before trying to reach the highest point?

The results you seek won't come from rushing to the endpoint. Instead, they arise from progressing through a series of levels. It’s essential to understand that every step matters.

When I help clients break free from pain, I focus on a hierarchy of needs. This approach ensures that we address each foundational element before moving on to more complex tasks.

The Hierarchy of Needs

1️⃣ Do your joints have full ranges of motion?

It's crucial to ensure that your joints can move freely. Limited motion can lead to compensatory patterns that cause pain.

2️⃣ Can you actively access that range on your own?

Having the range is one thing; being able to use it effectively is another. You need to be able to control your movements.

3️⃣ Are your right and left limbs and opposing muscle groups in balance?

Imbalances can create unnecessary strain. It's vital to ensure that both sides of your body work harmoniously.

4️⃣ Is your ratio of training to recovery favorable for recovery and adaptation?

Recovery is just as important as training. Without adequate rest, your body cannot adapt and grow stronger.

5️⃣ Do you have the motor control to perform the task or skill?

Motor control is essential for executing movements safely and effectively.

Your time is precious. Don't waste it trying to perform high-skill movements without the necessary prerequisites. Instead, focus on building a solid foundation first.

The Importance of a Solid Base

Building a strong base is not just about physical strength. It’s about creating a framework that supports your entire body. When you invest time in developing this foundation, you set yourself up for long-term success.

Why You Shouldn't Skip Steps

Many individuals want quick fixes. They jump straight to advanced exercises, hoping for immediate results. However, this approach often leads to frustration and injury. Skipping steps can hinder your progress and keep you trapped in a cycle of pain.

Instead, embrace the process. Each step you take towards building your base is a step towards a pain-free life.
